Garland’s Early History
The sugar beet factory played a major role in Garland’s early growth. In 1903, the Utah Sugar Company built a factory in Garland. As a result, the town began to grow around the sugar beet industry.
The community was later renamed after William Garland, the contractor connected to the factory’s construction. As the town grew, Garland became home to workers, farmers, local businesses, churches, schools, and other gathering places.
Growth of the Community
Garland officially became known as Garland in 1904. By 1906, the town had a post office in its current area. It also had a newspaper called The Garland Globe.
Over time, Garland continued to grow with homes, schools, parks, recreation programs, and community traditions. The historic Carnegie Library, built in 1914, is one reminder of Garland’s early development.
Recently, the library was updated with new stairs and a more accessible downstairs entrance. Because of these improvements help preserve the building while making it easier for the community to use and enjoy.
